Protect Your Van Against the Risk of Fire

Fire is a risk that can be overlooked both in the home and when travelling in your van.

Here’s a quick list of practical ways you can minimise the chance you’ll be affected.

  1. Make sure your caravan or motorhome has a working photoelectric smoke alarm.
  2. Most fires start in the kitchen so make sure you ‘keep looking while cooking’.
  3. Gas cylinders on caravans should be external, secure and with relief valve discharge point facing away from the van. Regularly check gas pipes and connectors are in good working order, particularly after driving on country roads.
  4. Have a fire extinguisher and fire blanket onboard.
  5. Find the nearest phone or check that mobile phones have reception. Keep handy the name and street address of your campground or caravan park.
  6. When staying in a caravan park, check the location of the nearest hose reel and evacuation point.
  7. Never leave an open fire or hot coals unattended.

This list is not exhaustive, we’d recommend visiting the MFS website for more information.
