RVs & Trucks – Sharing Parking Bays Protocol 101

27th Oct 2017

THE PROBLEM EXPLAINED

Truck Only’ parking bays are for trucks only. This is not negotiable. Parking bays which do not have designated signage need to be shared. B’doubles and Road Trains are legally required to utilise undesignated parking bays. By considering these vehicles as well as fellow caravaners and campers when we park, we can all make our roads safer for everyone.

When RVs are randomly parked B’doubles and Road Trains struggle to gain access to and then exit a shared parking bay. What’s worse is when trucks can’t find a place to park and get their required amount of sleep. Sleepy truck drivers on the road is not what we need!

The video, which was shot in daylight, demonstrates how caravans squeeze trucks out of parking bays. The problem is worse late at night when there are no lights, truckies are tired and needing access to shared parking bays and most caravaners and campers are asleep.

A PRACTICAL SOLUTION

Rod’s solution is simple. He calls for caravaners and campers to park grouped together, instead of spreading out. This will provide ample room for heavy vehicles to access these facilities and for drivers of heavy vehicle to take their legal rest breaks.

His take home message – with a little consideration we can create a safer travelling experience.
